Chicago Cubs lose 4-3 in the season opener

The Chicago Cubs offense woke up a little too late. Cubs struck out 10 times in 7 1/3 innings against Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez. They were trailing 3-0 heading to the top of the 9th inning when Willson Contreras launched a three-run, game-tying home run with one out in the ninth inning. Randal Grichuk countered with bases-loaded single with two out in the ninth to give the Cardinals a 4-3 win over the Cubs. Kyle Schwarber was on base 3 times and Kris Bryant went 0-4 with three strikeouts. Cubs had their chances. Bryant and Rizzo failed to connect with the bases loaded in the 8th inning. Cubs starting pitcher Jon Lester pitched five innings of one-run ball, striking out seven. Both teams are off Monday. Game 2 of this three-game series will be Tuesday at 7:15 p.m with Jake Arrieta going against Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright. Go Cubs!
