The second game of the three game series against the Cincinnati Reds got off to a great start for the Chicago Cubs.
After loading the bases in the top of the first, the Cubbies had the early lead. Tommy La Stella (filling in for the injured Kris Bryant) walked, bringing in Jon Jay for a run, Jason Heyward then had an RBI single, bringing in Ben Zobrist, and Anthony Rizzo (who scored on an error). This gave the Cubs the early lead of 3-0 going to the home half of the 1st.
The Cubs got another run, again coming from Heyward, with an RBI single in the third, making it 4-0 going to the bottom of the 3rd.
The 4th inning saw 5 more runs come in, thanks to Kyle Schwarber hitting a three run homer, followed by La Stella hitting a two run homer of his own. The Cubs had a huge lead of 9-0 going to the bottom of the 4th.
Cubs starting pitcher Mike Montgomery was in peak form. He allowed only 4 hits and one walk through his 6 innings pitched. The stellar defense behind him helped when needed, especially Javier “El Mago” Baez. We know why his nickname for players weekend is “The Magician”.
Closer Hector Rondon allowed the Reds to get on the board in the 9th, off of three solo home runs, making the final score 9-3.
The Cubbies remain in first place in the NL Central, and have won 5 consecutive games. They will go for the sweep Thursday, with Jake Arrieta pitching. They then go to Philadelphia to face the Phillies for a three game weekend series.
