Going for their 7th straight W, the Chicago Cubs started the last road trip of the regular season with a visit to Tropicana Field to take on the Tampa Bay Rays in a two game set.
Both Ben Zobrist and Joe Maddon were greeted with applause, cheers, and for Maddon, a video montage, which ended with a standing ovation from the crowd. If anyone forgot, Zo used to be a Ray, and Maddon was the manager for 10 years.
Designated hitter Kyle Schwarber got the first run of the game, with a solo homer to right field, his 28th of the season. 1-0 Cubs going to the bottom of the 2nd.
Jason Heyward led off the 5th with a single, though was thrown out at second on a fielders choice, leaving Addison Russell on first with one out. Javier Baez brought him in with an RBI double, adding to the Cubbies lead, 2-0. Jon Jay grounded out, putting Addi on third with two outs for Zo, who flew out, ending the inning.
Pitcher Mike Montgomery was looking crisp tonight, not allowing a hit until the 6th inning, in the form of a solo home run, making it 2-1. He was replaced in the 7th inning, allowing just the 1 hit/run, and no walks.
Wade Davis came in for the save in the bottom of the 9th, and extended his save streak to 32.
The Cubs remain in first in the NL Central, and will play the Rays again Wednesday, before heading to Milwaukee for a 4 game series.
